“Energy Only” Bill Got a Failing Score From CBO
Feb 5th
Published on February 4th, 2010
The recently much touted alternative “energy only” bill would not cost fossil industries, but instead would cost taxpayers $13.9 billion a year, according to this scoring by the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office – that has been gathering dust since September. This failing grade from the CBO has received no publicity at all. I can’t imagine why, can you?
The bill would authorize a total of $48.6 billion over the first three years. It would add $13.5 billioneach year to the deficit.
Renewable energy would share $10.4 billion of the $48 billion with electricity supply and electricity delivery funding. Nuclear More >

Fuels from Sunlight
To access the Fuels from Sunlight FOA (reference number DE-FOA-0000214) please direct your browser to: https://www.fedconnect.net/FedConnect/PublicPages/PublicSearch/Public_Opportunities.aspx and search for “Fuels from Sunlight” in the search box (note that the search flag should be set to “Title” or “Title/Description”).
After nearly 3 billion years of evolution, nature can effectively convert sunlight into energy-rich chemical fuels using the abundant feedstocks of water and carbon dioxide. All fuels used today to power vehicles and create electricity, whether from fossil or biomass resources, are ultimately derived from photosynthesis. While biofuels are renewable resources that avoid the environmental consequences of burning the sequestered carbon More >
$122 mil DOE RFP: Fuels from Sunlight, R&D Hub
Jan 4th
The U.S. Department of Energy requests proposals for the Energy for Innovation Hub – Fuels from Sunlight. The purpose of the Hub will be to assemble the most talented scientists and technologists to focus intense research and development efforts on the development of an effective solar energy to chemical fuel conversion system. The system should operate at an overall efficiency and produce fuel of sufficient energy content to enable transition from bench-top discovery to proof-of-concept prototyping.
$122 million expected to be available, 1 award anticipated.
A Letter of Intent is strongly encouraged but not required and is due 1/29/10, final proposals due More >

BEFI: PUTTING CENTRAL TEXAS AT FOREFRONT OF ENERGY INNOVATION
The U.S. Department of Energy recently recognized Austin’s Pecan Street Project for its visionary leadership in the development of smart-grid systems with a $10.4 million stimulus-funds award. The project will deliver electricity more efficiently to consumers using two-way digital flows that can save energy and reduce costs. It will also provide a model for a clean-energy economy in Central Texas — a key improvement because between 6 percent and 10 percent of energy is lost because grids are not sufficiently intelligent.

Dec 28th
Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced on Dec. 18 award selections for $60 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support transmission planning for the country’s three interconnection transmission networks. The six awards will promote collaborative long-term analysis and planning for the Eastern, Western and Texas electricity interconnections, which will help states, utilities, grid operators, and others prepare for future growth in energy demand, renewable energy sources, and Smart Grid technologies. This represents the first-ever effort to take a collaborative, comprehensive look across each of the three transmission interconnections. Secretary Chu also announced that he …
